How Do I Join? The Ogletown Isshinryu Karate Club provides
quality instruction in traditional Isshinryu karate to men, women and
children in Newark, De and
surrounding communities. The dojo concentrates on effective techniques
for real life situations, not tournament or other competitive training. Tidbits from other styles are also
presented. Call or email
Sensei Kadar to ask questions, or just show up before class. Feel free to watch a class if you want to check it
out first to see if this is for you. What happens the first time you show up for class? -
You will be required to fill out a registration form and sign a
waiver. The registration form
includes a section on physical considerations- if you have a bad knee or
shoulder or have asthma, Sensei needs to know about it. -
Sensei or another black belt will show you how to bow, how to stand,
and teach you a few basics. Children must
be at least 7 years old to join.
There are no exceptions.
If you've never trained before in a martial art,
try to come in without expectations.
This is especially important for adults. All potential students should want to study karate. It's okay if you're not sure of exactly what
karate is all about. If you're
curious, just ask questions. There's
no such thing as a stupid question. Don't assume a physical limitation will prevent
you from learning. |

from What is Isshinryu? Isshinryu is an Okinawan system of karate,
known for a straight fist, speed, and practical techniques. How do you say ‘Isshinryu’? Isshinryu is pronounced ‘ish-in-roo’. What is a 'Sensei'? 'Sensei' means 'one who has gone before',
or Teacher. How long will it take for me
to earn a black belt? Well, that's totally up to you. But the least amount of time would be over
three years of consistent training. |
